As we wrap up 2021 and take a break from Tournaments for a few weeks now is the time I usually spend going over all of the stats I have collected and work out which ones have shown promise financially.

Since the Tournament of Champions event in Hawaii I have kept track of the Top 10 in the previous week’s field in the following categories.

  • Strokes gained off the tee

  • Strokes gained on approach

  • Strokes gained around the green

  • Strokes gained putting

I then kept a track of the players performance the following week.
Here is what I found. Please remember this in only for players who came in the Top 10 of one of the categories above and played the following week, and these numbers are only for 2021.

 

Strokes gained off the tee
There were 166 players who came in the Top 10 strokes gained off the tee the week before and played the following week. 1 winner – Bryson Dechambeau came 6th for Strokes gained off the tee at WGC Workday and Won the week after at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Another 14 players came in the Top 5 throughout the year.

Strokes gained Approach
There were 165 players who came in the Top 10 strokes gained on approach the week before and played the following week. 1 winner – Colin Morikawa came 2nd for Strokes gained on Approach at the Genesis and won the week after at WGC Workday. Another 14 players came in the Top 5 throughout the year.

Strokes gained Around the Green
There were 168 players who came in the Top 10 strokes gained around the green the week before and played the following week.
8 winners – Matt Jones (Honda), Hideki Matsuyama (Masters), Sungjae Im (Shriners), Seamus Power (Barbasol), Si Woo Kim (Amex), Patrick Cantlay (BMW), K.H. Lee (Byron Nelson), Harris English (Travellers) along with another 22 who came in the Top 5.

Strokes gained Putting
There were 169 players who came in the Top 10 strokes gained putting the week before and played the following week.
1 winner – Max Homa came 9th strokes gained putting at Pebble and won the week after at Genesis. Another 10 players came in the Top 5 throughout the year.

So next time you hear a podcast or a commentator talk about how this players Strokes gained numbers are off the charts remember STROKES GAINED NUMBERS IN A CATEGORY DO NOT WIN GOLF TOURNAMENTS.
