Who has ever thought that the four-time World Cup winner would succumb to the 24th-ranked Asian players of Japan?

On 23rd November at Khalifa International Stadium, Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano, two ferocious players, Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano, paved the path for Japan’s first World Cup win of this edition.

Ilkay Gundogan and Serge Gnabry, who seemed in good form before the tournament, were not much help other than a penalty shot in the first half. As the match advanced, the Samurai Blue unfolded their true potential gradually.

Japan’s star player Yuya Osako, was ruled out through injury from the World Cup. So Daizen Maeda was in the role of striker. The forward Daichi Kamada is also having one of his best seasons. Germany, on their 20th appearance, vouched to keep the record of being unbeaten against Japan clean.

But the jaw-dropping silence from the stands brought back memories of horror from the 2018 World Cup, when for the first time, Germany exited the World Cup from the group stages.

Germany scored their first and last goal when the unruly tackle of Samurai’s keeper Shuichi Gonda knocked down David Raum inside the penalty box and conferred with a penalty. In the 33rd minute, Guendogan delivered an anticipated goal through a penalty.

Kai Havertz sent the ball into the opposition’s net only to find himself committing an offside after a VAR review. 19-year-old Jamal Musiala seemed quick on his foot. Even in the second half, Germans flooded Japan’s penalty box. In the 75th minute, Japan’s manager also injected some fresh talent. Manuel Neuer did defend well against Hiroki Sakai, but in the end, the ball was smashed by the newly substituted Doan.

The much-needed equaliser to spice up things. In the 83rd minute, Japan nailed the coffin of Germany when a long shot from Kou Itakura met Asano to send the ball past Schlotterbeck and Neuer. Coach Hansi Flick desperately substituted 18-year-old Youssoufa Moukok. But nothing altered the final score of 2-1.

The German side was devastated after the loss. Thomas Müller called this Ludicrous. Gundogan admitted the failure of his side in the defence. With the loss in the first game, Germany can be easily at the edge of exiting the World Cup 2018.

Another challenging opponent, Spain, in the same group, exhibited their fantastic aptitude to pass and possess the ball and score. Germany will face Spain on the 28th of November and Costa Rica on the 2nd of December.
