The United States Open golf tournament heads to the west coast to Los Angeles Country Club.
The Golf world was upended last year when the Saudi Arabian-backed LIV tour poached a few of the top golfers in the world, but even more surprisingly last week the PGA tour and the PIF (Public investment fund of Saudi Arabia) agreed to merge.
This is setting us up for one of the more interesting weeks in the history of golf.
The LIV tour guys are making their return to the main scene after taking a few weeks off after the PGA championship. Brooks Koepka, the reigning PGA Champ, Cam Smith, and Dustin Johnson, amongst others, are in the field and looking to continue a strong LIV performance in the majors so far.
The field is as strong as can be, with a lot of the top players in the world having played well in recent weeks. Kopeka is off a major. Rory McIlroy had a strong three rounds in Canada. If Scottie Scheffler could make a putt, he’d be on a Tiger-esque stretch of golf.
Jon Rahm has a green jacket and multiple wins in 2023. Jordan Speith, despite an injured wrist, is playing well. Even Rickie Fowler is back to playing very solid golf. Max Homa is back in California, at a track that he has won a lot at. What a weekend of golf we have coming up.
I haven’t even mentioned defending US Open Champ, Matthew Fitzpatrick.
The LACC is finally hosting a major. The historically ultra-private club is finally showcasing it’s features to the rest of the world, and this is the first major in LA in 75 years. There is no water on the entire track, so most of the defense is going to be its typical US Open grown-out rough.
The famous barranca is going to be the hazard that runs through a lot of the course. There are some strange features as well. There are 5 par threes on the score card and they will take the whole bag to get through them.
The 11th can stretch to 290 yards, while the 15th can play just 78 yards. This is going to be the typical US Open-style test of golf.
The golf course is going to show its teeth.
